Little Aladdin , Northern Quarter, Manchester
Fresh from another review but still with capacity for good food, I arrive after a very short walk at Little Aladdin. The "Total Vegan Cafe" (ahem - see below).
Aladdin do two types of samosa, a chana one and a veg one. They only have veg ones today, so I elect to have samasa chaat - one way or another I will get my chick pea's. The samosa chaat had been the reason I was sent hear by a friend so it seemed sensible.
Aladdin do a good sized samosa, slightly bigger than the ones at This and That. With chana, salad and sauce, it was a bargain at £3.90. A really decent lunch portion. Aladdin claims but be vegan and proud - good for them - though they then offered me yogurt sauce! Which I took, but probably shouldn’t have, as it would have been fine without.
The food other people were eating looked really very good and I sat wishing I hadn't already eaten a big plateful before arriving, it is very casual place, more takeaway with seats than cafe or restaurant, it isn't somewhere you would bring your mum on mothers day (unless you had a very awesome mum).
When they arrived, the pastry on the samosas was great- but suffered from microwave re-heating - evident by the loud ping before serving. It is a little weird as This and That also microwaved my samosas only 30 minutes ago - and yet they remained a bit more crispy. The filling is good, moist and tasty, not massively spicy but very good. I would have likely been an 8 if they had been crispy. But probably a 7.5 as a result of the slight sogginess. The taste combination with the chana was outstanding though and if we had been reviewing Samosa Chaat, it would have been a 9. We are not though.
