Humaz / Vegeez Punjabi Samosa (retail product)

So, this is the first review of a "cook at home" samosa from a retailer.

Mostly, it is the first, as I haven't until now, eaten any in this category worth reporting on. Today was a good day though with a very pleasant and surprising discovery.

The reviewed product appear to be for sale in the freezer section of Sainsbury's / Tesco / Morrisons and other smaller online and physical retailers. They are widely available , therefore I thought it safe to review them, also, it was too big a secret to keep to myself.

We elected to cook in the oven, as instructed, sometimes, this can lead to a dry pastry (fat frying does seem to keep everything juicy) but it said on the packaging to use the oven, so we did.

We were excited to get stuck in , as they smelled very good in the oven, and we were not disappointed. Punjabi samosas always seem to be plump little fellows, crammed with filling, and these followed that trend, there was no space left unfilled. The pastry was hot and crisp and they had cooked really well (from frozen) using the instructions on the box, they were a doddle to prepare.

The filling was soft and very spicy (in a good way). The insides could be accused of being a little mushy perhaps, with no obvious and distinct vegetables other than peas, but I can't say this mattered (see what I did there), as it was very tasty indeed with herbs and peppery flavours coming through in a nice strong way.

These were a worth a score of 8.0 and the best home cooked/retail samosa's I have ever had. I will be re-stocking my freezer soon. At £2.25 for ten, they are great value.
