Lilys Vegetarian Indian Cuisine
This one came recomended to me and it was less than a week until temptation got the better of me. It was a wise move.
We were seated in a beautifully decked out dining area - take outs are well catered for too but eating in is tempting when you see the colourful dining area through the door - it is called a cafe but is much more a restaurant. You would be very happy taking your mum here. Lily is the nick name for the mum of the family that has sadly passed away - but she clearly left a heck of a legacy.
The menu beautifully presented and is extensive, especially for starters/snacks. Considering everything is vegetarian, there is a lot to choose from and many new things to explore.
They do THREE , yes THREE, types of vegetarian samosa's. A generic Samosa, a Gujarati Samosa and a Punjabi Samosa.
We also ordered (as we were mob handed and rather hungry) , a Aloo-tiki chaat, onion bhaji and some round spicy potato balls. Items come in portions of 3 - so we had the chaat plus 15 items for four of us. The waitress tried to talk us out of this quantity but we almost ordered more - your reviewer is a greedy boy at the best of times, but when confronted with a fully veggie menu, the will power is weak. It was going to be a good feast.
All snacks came with a minty / yogurt based dip that was tasty and thick enough to stick to the snacks.
The gujarati samosas were first. Perfectly cooked, delicious crunchy pastry in just the right proportions. Very triangular and not ball shaped. Generous filling and a little sweet with a hint of coconut. Not very spicy but very good. The favourite of our group, but not of mine (though still a strong 8).
Second up were the Punjabi samosas. A less flaky pastry, much spicier and a stronger flavoured filling - slightly oversalted though but still very good indeed. A plumper samosa, again with a perfect balance between filling and pastry. I think the pastry on the Gujarati one had the edge though. A good 7.5.
The generic samosa was also fantastic, the pastry was a little more filo like - though still good - just not as good as the Gujarati pastry. The filling was generous and moist and was even spicier and beautifully tasty than the Punjabi ones. A solid 9. I could eat these all day. If they had the Punjabi samosa's pastry it would have been 9.5.
Everything was beautifully cooked with the exception fo the bhaji, which while lovely, was a little dry, it needed plenty of dip/sauce. The surroundings were colourful and lovely and the staff were smiley, happy and attentive. We did manage all the food after a struggle - and at £30 for lunch for 4 it represented excellent value.
There is much to return for here, I would like to try the Samosa Chaat given the quality of the aloo-tiki chaat. We didn't try several of the other snacks either - and we didn't even look to the main courses.
