The Pioneer, Dewsbury
Now this one was an unexpected find. I have been going to this curry house for over 30 years, but having moved away from the area, haven't been for ages.
It used to be a rough drunken curry house - I remember once being embarrassed to find a chapati behind a picture frame - knowing that it had found its way there from my fellow diners throwing food around several weeks before. It was that kind of place.
The food though, was always good, so it was interesting to have an opportunity for a bit of nostalgia - and some samosas via a take away.
The food travelled really well and we received a bucket full of chutney / sauce with salad in it to accompany our starters. This was very tasty and actually consumed independently (ok, some beer had been consumed so it was all a bit muddled).
The samosas were good though, pastry crispy despite being kept warm and with a nice chewy texture. The filling was well proportioned with identifiable vegetables and spices. Not too salty but also not terrifically spicy. A good all round Samosa though so a solid 8.0 for the vintage curry house of my youth.
The curry that followed was also very good if you are considering a visit. It has moved on from its roots and is delivering excellent and up to date indian take away and eat in food.
