La La's Batley
This was a bit of a short notice sash out for something for tea. My eye wandered to the lovely sounding channa puri as a starter, but I felt I should honour readers with a samosa review. I had a suspicion from a visit to the Huddersfield La La's that this was a mistake as I think I have had both before and the channa was flippin' good - but I suffer for the cause you know!
My heart always sinks when I see tiny triangles of filo , they are never great and I always imagine the chef extracting them from a printed bag in the freezer with the words "Iceland" printed on it. I am probably being over cynical here but they definitely never look as though I chef just made them using his hands - way too perfect.
So, they were crunchy, a bit small but probably enough food to serve as a starter. Just. The filling was actually really spicy, which my stuff nose and cold appreciated. I could really taste them. The veg filling was good too, though there is never enough in a tiny samosa to counter the dryness of the pastry, and this filling wasn't the most moist either.
The chutney / sauce wasn't bad, a bit insipid and too yogurty with few spices or flavouring. The salad was, well, it was salad.
My dining colleague did well with his Seekh kebabs, they looked really juicy and he didn't leave any. Shame they were meat.
La La's is usually pretty reliable and the giant naan breads are more than just a novelty. We had a good meal, good service and reasonable value. I should have had the channa puri though. A passable 5 for the samosa starter.
