This And That Cafe, Northern Quarter, Manchester

Now, you wouldn't stumble into this place by accident. Check out the exterior, it is down a dark alley too.

However, a recommendation came my way, from somebody that I trust, so on we go....

There is a canteen feel to the place and a set menu of "three curries for under a fiver" , it looked basic but the food smelt really good. The menu looked to change each day of the week which would keep it interesting. There is quite a bit of veggie stuff for those that prefer things that way - and slightly more interesting choices than the usual offering.

As I had 2x samosa appointments today, I stuck to tasty triangles - they weren't obviously available but a quick enquiry from the smiley chap behind the counter and we were good to go.

Samosas are £1 each, they are not mini but also not massive, so I elected for 3 of them. That would make a decent sized lunch or a starter for a greedy boy. I think they were warmed in a microwave (judging by the pinging) but they didn't loose any of their crispiness mysteriously, so that's a good start. Service was cafe style and not waiter style, this place is cut back to basics - the VERY basics, but I liked it. The staff were nice and it was quick - which sometimes, is just what you need.

I was offered a little salad on my plate which I accepted, then it was help yourself time. The chutney was in a big bowl and was a spicy yogurt looking sauce and next to it a squeezey bottle of tamarind sauce. There was also coriander in a bowl and chopped chillies - I love this. I added plenty.

The samosa pastry was excellent and the size / filling proportion also good. The filling was moist and there was plenty of it. They were very tasty but not that spicy. The sauce helped - and was probably needed to be honest.

This place was a great find, I will be back. I would have loved to try the curries (and definitely the massive and great looking bhaji).
A well earned 7.5 for the samosas.
